History of EFT Tapping

EFT’s foundation lies in the principles of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), specifically acupuncture and acupressure. Read more…

Dr. George Goodheart was a chiropractor who studied acupuncture and integrated it into his Applied Kinesiology method. He discovered that tapping or applying pressure on acupuncture points could yield similar benefits to needles.

Dr. Roger Callahan was an american clinical psychologist who studied Applied Kinesiology and the meridian system.
Callahan made a pivotal discovery while working with a patient named Mary who had a severe water phobia. During a session, Mary mentioned a stomach ache related to her fear. Callahan, drawing on his knowledge of meridians, instructed her to tap under her eye (a point connected to the stomach meridian).
Mary’s stomachache and, remarkably, her lifelong water phobia disappeared. This led Callahan to explore strategic tapping sequences on specific meridian points to treat different emotional problems. He developed a complex system called Thought Field Therapy (TFT), which used unique algorithms of tapping points for various issues.

Gary Craig streamlined the process, reducing the number of tapping points to a core set that addressed most of the major meridians. He found this simplified approach to be just as effective as TFT for a wide range of issues. Craig named his method Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT).

Clinical Studies

Over 100 clinical studies have investigated EFT for various conditions, including anxiety, depression, PTSD, pain management, and phobias. Some research suggests that EFT can be effective in reducing the emotional intensity associated with these issues and can lead to physiological changes like reduced cortisol levels. Read more…

Major institutions like the American Psychological Association have acknowledged EFT as an evidence-based treatment for PTSD.
